Delhi Gate - Historical place in Arcot - Ranipet, India

The gate was part of the huge fort with circumference of 8 kms built by Daud Khan Nawab in 1698 was later destroyed by Tippu Sultan in 1783. Located at Arcot, a historical town and was the headquarters of Nawab of Carnatic dating back to 18th Century AD, now we can see only few remains of the old fort wall. Robert Clive, after he captured the fort from Chanda Sahib in alliance with Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah, he renamed this gate as "Delhi Gate" to signify Robert Clive's next move of the company to capture the Mughal throne in Delhi and ultimately ruling over entire India. The 51 days seige ended on 15 th Nov 1751 by capturing the fort with just 200 European soldiers, 300 sepoys, and 8 officers (with no experience) opposing 1100 soldiers (including French troupe) It is one of a longest sieges which transformed him from a clerk into one of the fiercest general of East India Company. There is a room atop this gate which was Clive's personal room. Later, this gate functioned as an entrance for the merchants from in and around to enter the town by paying tax to britishers.

Major-General Robert Clive a name synonymous with East India Company and the British India had a very different job with the company at the beginning and had nothing to do with battlefield or the conquest over the Mughals. Being from Kolkata I was well aware of Robert Clive and his role in the city for defeating Siraj Ud Daulah and recapturing Fort William(old) but it did not strike me that much before his accomplishment in city he had done something dramatic in the city of Arcot. Robert Clive started working for East India Company in 1744 as a clerk mostly keeping the records and other desk jobs. He was posted in Madras (Chennai) and it was also during this time that the French were also consolidating their influence in Southern India and with their base from Pondicherry attacked Madras in the year 1746. The company's forces were heavily defeated by the French and the town was captured.

It's on the way to Ranipet to Aarani. The Arcot Fort was part of the famous Battle of Arcot, which led to a British victory. One of the gates of the fort was renamed "Delhi Gate" to signify the beginning of the capture of Delhi. The entrance of the gate was constructed in the style of a Mughal arch. Over the gate is Robert Clives room.

One of the few tourist spot available in vellore. The place is not well maintained. Government should take steps to maintain this heritage spot. It is one of the oldest historical places in Arcot, Located on the southern banks of Palar River, the city straddles a trade route between Chennai and Bangalore or Salem, between the Mysore Ghat and the Javadi Hills. The town's strategic location has led to it being repeatedly contested and prompted the construction of a formidable fortress. The Nawabdom of the Carnatic was established by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who in 1692 appointed Zulfiqar Ali Khan as the first Nawab of the Carnatic. In 1740, the Marathaforces came down upon Arcot. They attacked the Nawab, Dost Ali in the pass of Damalcherry. In the war that followed, Dost Ali, one of his sons Hasan Ali, and a number of prominent persons lost their lives. This initial success at once enhanced Maratha prestige in the south. From Damalcherry the Marathas proceeded to Arcot. It surrendered to them without much resistance. Chanda Saheb and his son were arrested and sent to Nagpur. In 1751, The English captured the town during the conflict between the United Kingdom and France for control of South India. The English successfully held it with only 500 men against the French and the Nawab, resisting for 56 days (23 September to 14 November 1751). The enemy army eventually dissolved and its leader, Chanda Shahib, was killed. Mohammed Ali Khan Walajah took over as Nawab, effectively serving as a vassal of the British. His successors soon ran up enormous debts at the hands of English speculators. In 1801, the town was annexed by the British East India Company. In the 20th century, Arcot declined in importance and was incorporated into Vellore District. Arcot has the tomb of the famous 18th-century Sufi Saint Tipu Mastan Aulia. The story goes that from the blessings of Tipu Mastan Aulia, Hyder Ali had a son Tippu Sultan of Mysore, whom he appropriately named after the saint. In Kaspa, Sri Vaikuntha Varadharaja Perumal Temple is situated. The speciality of this temple is that it is the only temple where the Lord Vishnu statue is erected in the middle with Sri Devi and Bamadevi at its sides. This type of posture of Lord Perumal is only present in this temple. Moreover, the three statues are designed using a single stone. This temple was built during the Pallava era.
