Kalan Masjid, but commonly known as Kali Masjid (Black Mosque), which has been built on a raised platform which is 20ft above the ground. This bright green mosque is higher than Delhi's other functioning mosques. Some people also say that the reason behind the name Kalan was, in the Arabic language "kalan" means big and this mosque at that time was one of the biggest. Another reason of the name "kali masjid" was once after completion, it was polished in coconut oil but the building turned black in the first rainy season. Building consists lower and wider domes and sloping minarets. The main entrance of the mosque is at the eastern side. To enter inside, masjid has a number of steps which takes directly into the main hall of the mosque. Every fourth step is wider so that devotees especially women and small children can rest if they get tires. After passing two tall tapering pillars one can see a beautiful "hauz". Domes, sloping minarets and chhajjas reflect the Tughlaq style of architecture. History: During the reign of Emperor Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1387 AD. In 1386 Khan-e-Jahan Junan Shah the prime minister of Feroz Shah Tughlaq built this mosque. Khan-e-Jahan Junan shah was the son of a Hindu convert to Islam. It is one of the seven mosques said to have been built in Delhi by him. The seven mosques are listed below 1. Khidki Masjid 2. Begumpuri Masjid 3. A mosque in Kalu Sarai 4. Actual Mosque is on first floor after having 27 Steps. painted by mosque committee and not under archaeological survey of india. Total 30 small domes represents firoz shah period architecture. having a big Hauz (Reservoirs) for namaz (prayer) wuzu. a small madarsa for learning Quran for local resident's children.
