College Square Bengali War Memorial - Historical landmark in Kolkata - Kolkata, India

Right on the east side of the College Square park there stands a fenced memorial which has "49 Bengal" engraved in it. This is in memory of the 49th Bengalee Regiment which was raised in 1916 for the then raging World War I. After the induction and initial training, the first batch of 228 soldiers, were sent to Mesopotamia front in the Middle East. Of whom 63 died and a memorial was built in College Square in 1924 to honour the dead. The famous Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was part of this regiment but did not see action. He wrote his famous poem, Kamal Pasha on his return home. It is said that this poem drew inspiration from his military experience and his inspiration from the life of the Pasha. Begalee Regiment was disbanded in 1920.

A usually unnoticed war memorial dedicated to the soldires 49th Bengali regimentwho had lost their lives while fighting for the British army during the First World War.

Bengali War Memorial is a marble monument, built in memory of the 49th Bengali Regiment. Base of the monument has the names of 52 Bengalis killed in the war. Composed entirely of ethnic Bengalis, the Regiment was raised in 1917 & disbanded in 1922 During the First World War, the British had created a Double Company with men from Bengal in its armed forces. Later this was renamed as the 49th Bengali Regiment. The 49th Bengalis were trained in Karachi & despatched to Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) The unhealthy climate took their toll as large numbers fell sick & died.
