Visited Cochin Port Maritime Heritage museum today morning. It is located near Sisu Vihar Nursery School. Those who are interested in the history of Willington Island must visit these museum. They have all old photographs since the Island made by Dradgeing. It is really wonderful to see old photo showing the construction of old Mattancharry Bridge. For entering the Museum Cochin Port is Charging a small fee of Rs 10/- per person. I highly recommend people to visit the museum and gain knowledge.
It is a small museum. Not that much visitors were there when I last visited. This museum will give an idea how cochin port builded and its formative years through photographs. The miniature of port and equipments used usually in a port and other machinery for Port construction is also exhibited here. The primitive equipments used by Portmen and Fishernen can also be seen here. The thing to note is that Photography is strictly prohibited here. The Watchmen comes and tells occasionally 'do not take photo here'. However after interaction with him we felt that he was a Knowledgable person about Kochin Port's history. As people rarely come for a visit, we will get a kind of freedom that lacks in usual museums.
Some good collection of antique ship body parts. The place dosent stay much crowded. The entry fee is rs. 10. Bathrooms are not much clean. It's near to the port, easily noticable from road.
Not much to see. More of them are photographs and its showing us various events happened in history of willington islands. And few miniatures of ships and dredging ships used in the creation of island. Having a entry fee of Rs. 10 for adult photography is allowed No separate parking area have to park on the roadside Not much crowded Very quiet area
Nice place for history lovers. Illustrates the history of Wellington island beautifully. Neat and clean. More detailing and labeling is desirable.
Heritage Museum in Willington Island where a good collection of unique and rare navigational equipments and photographs connected with the saga of construction of Cochin Port during 1920-40 period are on display. The exhibits reveal the hardships faced by Sir Robert Bristow and his workforce, who developed the Port amidst financial constraints and without technology support. The story of evolution of the modern Port of Cochin has a thrilling chapter spread over two decades when the enormous task of creation of Willingdon Island and berths around it happened. The two decades transformed an old port where ships berthed in outer sea for lighterage to a modern port that beckoned ships to a safe inner harbor round the year. Robert Bristow a harbor engineer posted in Malta was picked up to develop the Cochin port by the Government. The poor equipments, skill and financial resources had failed the previous attempts. The cutting of rock like sand bar across Vypeen and possible adverse consequences on the Vypeen shore and the Vembanad lake had scared engineers to attempt the project. Bristow who aimed in 1920 through meticulous planning and perseverance overcame the strong challenges to create the Wtllingdon Island. When he left in 1941 he had transformed Cochin as the safest harbour in the peninsula. where ships berthed alongside the newly reclaimed inner harbour, equipped with a long array of steam cranes. This museum houses visuals from the decades of creation of the artificial Island, the berths around it and the raillroadlbridges connecting the Island to the main land. The modem harbour of Cochin ushered the contemporary minor* development of Kerala. Let us salute the generation that toiled hard to create this great infrastructure
This is a small museum showing the history of willingdon island and cochin port. If you like history and ships this is an ideal place for you. The staff here are friendly and will happily explain to you regarding the various items in the museum. There isn't any parking space around but you can park on the road as there isnt much traffic around.
