It's only about the structure, not about the course it provides. Rathin Thakur built the house after the demise of Bhanushingha. The location is pretty serene. The house's exterior is well maintained, more the way it should be while other residents of this hill are BPL. Took a hiking route instead of a car. Replicas are kept here, not the original ones.
My sojourn to the quaint hamlet of Kalimpong unveiled an enchanting tapestry of cultural nuances, where the ethos of the Bengali populace resonated harmoniously with the timeless legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Amidst this idyllic setting, my visit to the diminutive abode known as Chitrabhanu was an immersive experience, a rendezvous with the lyrical essence that underscores the essence of Bengali heritage.
Just opposite to the famous Pine View Nursery, this house was built and used by Rathindranath Tagore, so of the great poet Rabindranath. As per a plaque at the gate, this place was built exactly 2 years after Rabindranath's death, on 8th August 1843 (22 Shraban 1350 bangabda). The Nobel Laureate poet did select the land, but did not see the house built, and hence never stayed here. The house is named Chitra Bhanu, same as Rathindranath's studio in Shantiniketan. Pratima Devi, wife of Rathindranath, stayed here for extended period, and set up workshops assisting local youth to be trained in craftsmanship. In 1962, she handed this institution to Govt. of West Bengal. Later, in 2018, this place was declared a heritage property. There's a small but very carefully built museum at ground floor of this two-story house. View from the lawn is mesmerizing, and has an amazing collection of flora.
A noble place to all Bengali intellectuals, it is with memory of Rathindranath Tagore , in fact Rathindranath Tagore was there in the last phase of his life. But no museum with the history of the house is maintained. Only some old pictures print out are scattered. Most funny thing is when you enter in the museum, some teddy bears are kept in a steel rack on the left. It harts, please restore the thoughts and works of Tagores during their stay in Kalimpong.
The sign board mentions that this is Craft Teachers Training Centre. It is just opposite to Pine View Nursery and this house is where Rabindranath Tagore stayed for sometime in 1920s. The name of the house is Chitrabhanu. There is a marble plaque mentioning the name. The house was very well maintained. But now the condition is bad due to lack of maintenance and damage due to a past earthquake. State Government must do something to restore this beautiful house as it is very close to the heart of every Bengali. There is a picture of Mrinalini Devi in the study room. There is supposed to be a museum here but there is no guide so the visitor will return sad and disheartened.
It is just opposite Pine View Nursery...Here Rabindranath Tagore stayed some times now it is like ruin...Govt. should restore it properly...It is closed on sundays and one have to visit it from outside on sundays so try to avoid visit on sundays...
