Chettinad Palace - Featured Reviews (2110)
Tourists are Not Allowed to enter the Palace. Only people's with proper permission from owner/Manager is allowed. You can see 3 palace from outside. And the village is filled with many heritage buildings. Near to this palace there is another small palace which allows tourist to visit.
Beautiful place. Do take prior permission to enter the palace. Or else just take a round of the village. Near and clean place with the old beautiful buildings standing intact.
Kanadukathan palace is an identity of chettinadu heritage houses. We can only take photographs infront of the building and public is not allowed inside the building premises. This house is shooting spot of South Indian movies especially Ajith Kumar, Aiswarya Rai, Tabu starred Kandukonden Kandukonden movie
The first word is Disappointed... They no longer allowed tourists inside the palace... But, you can take a photo from outside (like I did) they won't mind it... From the locals, we get to know they stopped the tourists 5 years back. Only for commercial purposes, they allowed the respective. There is a nearby place, where they allowed you with 50rs entrance fees... Most of the inside photos we are seeing belong to them... If ur objective is to visit the main palace, I would say NO, however, we can go for it because we can roam other streets with traditional homes which we see a lot in the movies. It is good to see... It remembers a lot of serials and movie scenes...
The palace is worth visiting once, though you need the permission from the owner (who stays in Chennai) to visit inside this palace. Albeit, the whole village is so serene and peaceful to watch. You can stroll through the roads of the village, that will take you back in time.
Visit here only if u want to see the palace from outside. They are not allowing anyone inside.
Mahalakshmi weaving Center is closer to this, so may be you can visit this along. On the way you will find many Chettiar mansions so walking through the path in and around palace will give you a good feel.
This palace was built by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar in 1912. With so many beautiful ornamental details it took seven years to complete the construction of the palace. This palace exposes the traditional Chettinad architecture. Also known as "Chettinad Palace", Kanadukathan Palace is located at Karaikkudi taluk in Kanadukathan, at a distance of 60 km. from Sivaganga, 15 km. from Karaikkudi, 2 km. from Chettinad bus stand.
This was our first Karaikudi visit. So went here to witness the rich chettinad culture. The house is still used by the family on few occasions so not all visitors were allowed inside. Better to catch someone who can get permission to visit beforehand. If not visitors are strictly not allowed inside.
The inside of the palace started with first showcase area that has the pictures of ancestors and 2-4 elephant horns. The next area was a small open terrace space used extensively for functions. Next there was a small sitting space dedicated to the family ladies to witness the functions. Further inside there was a large open terrace area with kitchen in one corner. The doors and windows had lot of chettinad wood work that are still safely maintained from olden days. Overall one of a kind place to visit and enjoy it's uniqueness.
Great place, very well maintained and staff is very knowledgeable, unassuming and helpful to a fault. Their recommendations of food outside the resort were great. The pool with a depth of 7 feet is great for a good swim. The room was airy and ventila
