The chowk has been developed as a celebration centre as it has witnessed many historical events. It has been decorated with scripted history of Shivaji Maharaj in Kolhapur. It will also provide information on the thrills of installing the statue way back in 1945. The lights, history wall and several other changes will make the chowk more attractive. The statue was installed in 1945 by late Bhalji Pendharkar and Baburao Painter along with other contemporary activists. The beautification of statue remained on the back-foot for several reasons, but eventually the initiative was taken and necessary funds were provided. According to a historical book, the current place of the statue used to host a statue of the then Bombay province's former British Governor Sir Lesli Wilson and it was inaugurated viceroy Lord Irwin in November 1929. During the 1942 Quit India movement, the statue was protected by police as freedom fighters were committed to destroy it. It was partially destroyed in 1943 and few freedom fighters were prosecuted by the British government. The statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was then installed on May 13, 1945.

Shivaji Bhonsle I (Marathi [Siva.ji. bho.s(@)le.]; c. 1627/1630 - 3 April 1680[3]) was an Indian warrior king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Over the course of his life, Shivaji engaged in both alliances and hostilities with the Mughal Empire, Sultanate of Golkonda, and Sultanate of Bijapur, as well as European colonial powers. Shivaji's military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a Maratha navy. Shivaji established a competent and progressive civil rule with well-structured administrative organisations. He revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions and promoted the usage of Marathi and Sanskrit, rather than Persian, in court and administration.
