A Geoheritage spot in Chennai. Massive rock with blue-quartz and opx.The term Charnockite was coined in honour of Job Charnock, the founder of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). Rev. H.B.Hyde found out that his tombstone at St. John's Churchyard was fashioned from this rock. Job Charnock's name was thus immortalised by the subsequent naming of the, rock that was used for his tombstone as charnockite. It was Sir Thomas H. Holland of Geologic Survey of lndia who employed this term in 1893 to designate the greasy looking rock which was being quarried around Madras (now Chennai). The genius of Holland commemorates both the rock as well as the founder of the great city of Kolkata which functioned as the capital of India and celebrated its tricentenary a few years ago. The occurrence of hypersthene granite in South India was announced in 1892 by Thomas Oldham, the then Director of the GSI. Sir Thomas Holland observed during his work the next year that the hypersthene granite in the Madras area were the same as the tombstone of Job charnokite. Holland considered that the exact location from where the tombstone was quarried near Chennai city was obtained from the neighbourhood of St. Thomas Mount. Considering the importance of these rocks the site was declared as a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India in collaboration with the Archbishop of Chennai, Mylapore. The recent radiometric age data on the charnockitcs ranging up to 3500 million years.
