It is 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Alipurduar, the nearest town. The King of Bhutan used the fort to protect the portion connecting Tibet with India, via Bhutan. The Fort was the most notorious and unreachable prison in Indian after the famous Cellular jail in Andaman. One can trek for some more kilometres to the top to reach Lepchakha village, the scenary from the top is just mind blowing!

Buxa fort is one of the famous tourist destination in dooars. This fort has a historical value. Fort has many stories in pre independence era. If you take a guide he will share the story of freedom fighters. But this fort is not properly maintained, some negligence found here. But the view and way to reach the fort is nice. No vehicles are reaching out, only trek is the option here. So take water when you will start from zero point.

It is a almost 12 Km up and down hike from the base. Initially you have to take forest department car from santalabari to reach out the base and then start the hike to reach the fort. It takes approximately 250 Rs. per car along with the guide charge. During the hiking the scenic beauty of the place is mesmerizing. After reaching the fort you will able to observe the prisons where the Britishers imprisoned the freedom fighters. It is said that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was also imprisoned here for a time being. On your way to the fort there are small places to seat for a while to take rest. Small shops of momos, tea and other snacks are available near the fort for the visitors. It is a good day trip option while visiting Jayanti.

"megher gaay'e jelkhaanaa" - Poet Subhash Mukhopadhyay, once a prisoner of Buxa Fort, has described this infamous prison camp during the British period by this name. This abandoned fort is located in the remote area of Buxa Hills at a height of 2,844 feet inside the Buxa National Park. It is said to be the most notorious and inaccessible prison in India after Andaman's Cellular Jail. The nature here is decorated in a new form during the enchanting monsoon of Dooars. The surroundings become alive and fresh with the incessant rain. It receives the highest rainfall in the state. Buxa is called 'Wettest place of West Bengal.'(500 cm annually)

It was a lifetime experience to trek to Buxa fort. The trek was adventurous and exciting. It's a great historical landmark of North Bengal. The scenic beauty once you reach the fort is mesmerising. Far from the busy life it felt really soothing. We visited some ruins which witnessed the ancient history of the fort. There were a few resting spots where we could avail refreshments during the long 3 km trek.

Buxa fort trek took roughly 1hr from zero point. On the way one will find the buxa view point from where you can see the vast forestry land along with Jayanti river. The fort which was jail previously is now renovated but because of the renovation the originality got affected in a larger scale.

Buxa Fort is a historical place, it's ruins are here also some restoration work by government has been done. It was once a territory of Bhutan King. In British rule it was used as a jail for freedom fighters and considered as the 2nd most impenetrable jail after cellular Jail of Andaman. One has to trek for some kilometres to reach the top, level - easy to moderate. The fort is on a plain surface on the top of the hill and the surroundings have big trees, the serenity of the place is beyond words.. when it rains the place becomes more magical, mist covers the top, it often gives horror movie vibes ! One can trek for some more kilometres to the top to reach Lepchakha village, the scenary from the top is just mind blowing!

Such a lovely place ..This is not a popular tourist place till now....If you are going to buxa fort and Lepchakha, don't forget to visit this small village. The village is covered with 'Lal Patta' trees. You will feel the tranquility here for sure..A
