Butterfly Park - Ecological park in Thenmala - Kollam, India

A very nice place to go for a walk and see different species of butterflies. Tickets can be obtained from the entrance. You can enjoy the greenery and sounds of nature. There are different statues of the butterfly lifecycle which is a treat to see. There is also a kids park and clean public toilets. There is a nice gazebo where you can eat your breakfast if you have packed it for the road. Beware of monkeys though. Try to reach as early as 9am as the crowds will be less and you can get the park all to yourself. There is also a musical fountain show if you happen to stay towards the evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the morning walk and it is especially delightful for photographers to get some good pictures. Highly recommended!

Butterfly Safari Park, part of Thenmala Ecotourism, is located in the Culture Zone the entrance of which is from the the Ecotourism office itself. Though a guided walk is provided here through the park, the guide himself didn't seem to be very knowledgeable either about the butterflies or the host plants. Various host plants, specific for specific flies are planted here to attract them. The number of flies and chances of seeing them depend up on the time of the day and the season. The whole walk takes about an hour. Though it is claimed to be an Educational tour, didn't seem like one. Looks like the staff needs to educate themselves little more before they can impart some valuable information on butterflies and their host plants. However it is a good experience walking through the garden watching these beautiful creatures.

A small area and lots of butterflies there... But the problem nobody from officials accompanied with us for explaining about butterflies.. They charged Rs. 70/head for visiting inside the park and really disappointed that the conditions inside the park very worst in nature.. Only interested to charge from us.. And i don't think its worthfull for that much of money they charged from us.. I am confused, why there is a guide or at least a park keeper not available inside the park..?? asking the same to the ticket counter also

One gets the ambiance of the jungle walk...But the butterfly citings were limited. And you will get fresh fragrance of flowers....you hv to walk through the park for 30 minutes....

Lots of butterflies, but since it was breeding season, it was a guided tour. The guide was helpful in describing the varieties and life cycle. Wish we could spend more time though.

Asia's first butterfly safari park at Thenmala Thenmala, the first eco-tourism project in India, has hosted another first-of-the-kind attraction with Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism inaugurating Asia?s first butterfly safari park here on February 22. The artificially created 3.5 hectare park is designed by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI). 125 species of butterflies have already been sighted in the park. To boost the feeding and breeding of the butterflies, microhabitats with special shrubs and trees have been formed. The park has roosting plants and host plants that provide the right leafy meal to caterpillar species and plants with leaves which butterflies depend on for their alkaloid requirements. Special water sprinklers and artificial ponds have also been included in the park. Visitors to the park can watch the various life cycles of many rare and endemic butterflies like ?Autumn leaf butterfly?.

One gets the ambiance of the jungle walk, the butterfly citings were limited. The walkway is paved for 30 percent of the park. The Remaining is mostly unpaved. Older people might find it difficult. The air is very fresh and feels refreshing. Also, do note mobile signal is limited, do carry water if required.
