Nice ghat Ghats in Varanasi are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the Ganges river. The city has 84 ghats. Most of the ghats are bathing and puja ceremonial ghats, while two ghats, Manikarnika and Harishchandra, are used exclusively as cremation sites. Most of the ghats in Varanasi were rebuilt in the 18th century under the maratha patronage. The patrons of current ghats are Marathas, Shindes (Scindias), Holkars, Bhonsles, Peshwes (Peshwas), and Maharajas of Benares. Many ghats are associated with legends or mythologies while other ghats have private histories and users. A morning boat ride on the Ganges along the ghats is a popular visitor attraction. It is derived from Sanskrit, "ghatta" (Sanskrit: gttttH). It means an embankment or a landing place.Ghat, a term used in the Indian subcontinent, depending on the context could either refer to a range of stepped-hill such as Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats; or the series of steps leading down to a body of water or wharf, such bathing or cremation place along the banks of a river or pond, Ghats in Varanasi, Dhoby Ghaut or Aapravasi Ghat.Roads passing through ghats are called Ghat Roads The practice of cremation in Varanasi has become controversial for the environmental pollution it causes to the River Ganges. In the 1980s, the Government of India funded a Clean Ganges initiative in order to address cremation and other sources of water pollution along the Ghats of Varanasi. In many cases, the cremation is done elsewhere and only the ashes are dispersed into the river near these Ghats.Furthermore, untreated sewage is a pervasive source of river pollution in India. City municipal waste and untreated sewage is the largest source of pollution of the River Ganges nearby the Ghats of Varanasi.
Peaceful place though you need to find a nook to sit down among lots of visitors. Better to go in winter afternoons when it's not super crowded. You can also go for a boat ride visiting the ghats or can cross the river to go on the sand beach on opposite side. They have horse and camel riding options on sand beach too.
Awesome view of Ganga can be seen from this ghat best for hangout with friends in group. You can put your leg in the river sitting on the stairs and feel the inner happiness of yours. This is really a nice ghat but if you are non smoker or if you hate the smell of cigarettes and weeds you will find difficulty to spend much time.. It is next to the Tulsi ghat.
Quite nice ghaat but people visiting this place always leave their eating drinking leftover garbage at ghats or close to the bank stairs. Little remarkable information over this ghat is attached in pics.
Open area for hanging out by the river side. But its not recommend. In the month of august as the water level has risen way above. Even the boats are restricted from carrying out tourists. Only the cruise is allowed. You will find a number of people offering prayers to the Ganga and children playing around and swimming. It's advisable for the people visiting now in this month not to venture as there is a water current mid way. Better be near the shore with utmost alertness. Happy Banaras
This is quite peaceful than the famous Assi Ghat.
