I was surprised by the maintenance level of the Begum Samru cemetery. Actually, it cannot be called Begum Samru only cemetery but it has many more people's cemetery of the Begum Samru era. Also, this cemetery is used even now for many Christians who would like to be buried. However, Sardana, the tehsil where the cemetery is located, do not have much population of Christian community.
Joanna Nobilis Sombre (c. 1753- 27 January 1836), popularly known as Begum Samru (nee Farzana Zeb un-Nissa),[2][3] a convert Catholic Christian[4] started her career as a nautch (dancing) girl in 18th century India, and eventually became the ruler of Sardhana, a small principality near Meerut.[5][2] She was the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, inherited from her European mercenary husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre.[2] This mercenary army consisted of Europeans and Indians. She is also regarded as the only Catholic ruler in India, as she ruled the principality of Sardhana in 18th- and 19th-century India.[6][7]Begum Sumru died immensely rich but without an heir. Her inheritance was assessed as approximately 55.5 million gold marks in 1923 and 18 billion deutsch marks in 1953. Her inheritance continues to be disputed to this day.[8] An organisation named "Reinhards Erbengemeinschaft" still strives to resolve the inheritance issue.[9]
Not really one of the well maintained architectural sites in the country! There are many tombs inside the cemetery..some are well preserved while some are in not so good condition. A narrow lane from a crowded market leads to the main entrance gate. A car can go all the way till the main gate.
I personally feel here is nothing special like come and visit this place specially. I don't even know who was Begum Samru, and why should I know. If something is historically special, then most people know about it. And the information about which to gather information will be what is historic.
It comes under the Archeological Survey Of India.Having history behind it,it needs a LOT MORE attention. It is a pity......., as original bricks from the graves have gone missing...
