This Bijamandal Shiva temple is the recent excavation in Khajuraho. Such a beautiful carvings are left as it is because of insufficient funds. Ruins of temple walls and many other sculptures are waiting to get its shape...reaching this place is bit difficult by car and 2 wheeler. Please walk and reach the place. No entry fees and wait time. There are boards which tells you the information about the project.
We love visiting places that are authentic and rich in history. Bijamandal was a different experience because the temple has not been rebuilt and is a heap of ruins. The plan says that the temple ruins excavated was bigger than the size of Kandariya Mahadev. So far, the authorities have built the base foundation only and rest of the rocks are placed atop each other. We witnessed a bunch of stones with carvings and animal sculptures among the rubble. The excataion site manager/caretaker told us the site has been lying in ruins from last 10 years. The project was stalled due to budget issues. Hence amid the fields and unbuilt paths, Bijamandal ruins still stands alone, waiting to narrate its story. This is the last temple of the Southern Group of Temples where its impossible for vehicles to reach.
It is a good reference for how the completed temples would have been restored. There are a few interesting carvings to see. It is a free site.
It's temple in ruins not completed. The excavation is complete and there are other 4 temples for which the excavation work is going to start.
