It's a great place. Very peaceful and devout place. Only men wearing Dhuti, Gamucha and Cheleng Sadar are allowed to enter the Kirtan Ghar (main house of worship). No women are allowed to enter the main Kirtan Ghar.
No Words of Pleasure , unbelievable, Super Scenic...... life time experience....
I visited this place 4 yes ago during the Holi festival. I loved the entire environment and energetic crowd roaming around the Kirtana Ghar, playing colours and spreading and offering to the Almighty. Lots of people...religious offerings...loved the locals for decent and devoted manners. Please do visit in your lifetime for a pristine feeling.
Barpeta Satra Barpeta Dating back to 500 years old, Barpeta Satra is an important place of worship in Assam. It was established by a saint named Madhabdev in the year 1583 AD and was earlier known as Barpetathan. Saint Madhabdev stayed there for 8 long years but left this place in order to learn from Sri Srimanta Sankaradeva, and gave the responsibility of the satra to one of his disciples named Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata. Satra premises begin with 3 Batchara (entry gates), the main complex is protected by walls namely, Nahati Batchara (westside entry), Uttar Hati Batchara (North Entry) and Dakshinhati Batchara (Entry from South). On the eastern side of the satra, a canal (Hari Jaan) is flowing. People are not allowed to travel on any vehicle beyond these Batchara. The rules are mentioned on signboards in Assamese and Hindi. It was originally built as a kutcha house but later concreted in the year 1870 and is spread over a huge area with decorative wall paintings. POPULAR THINGS TO DO & SEE AROUND Exploring the entire premise is an interest thing to do and this can take 2-3 hours of your time. The kirtan ghar here is a great example of excellent craftsmanship. Baghbar Hill is another place that you can visit. It is located 20 kms from Barpeta. The most important place that you can visit from Barpeta is the Manas National Park which is a reserve forest offering scenic landscape. It is home to many animals including tiger, elephant, leopard, and golden langur. GETTING THERE You can reach the Barpeta satra by auto rickshaws or taxis, however you can only reach till the gate and from there no vehicle is allowed.

Barpeta Satra is a well-known sattra situated at Barpeta in the Indian state of Assam. It was established by vaishnavite saint Madhabdev in 1505 shakabda (1583 AD). The earlier name of the satra was Barpeta Than. When Madhabdeva left the Satra, he gave the responsibility to his disciple Sri Mathuradasa Ata (1490-1596 AD), a Chandala by origin to take care of the Satra and he became the first Satradhikar of Barpeta Satra. It was Burha Ata who systematized the administration of the Satra leading to development of the institution and the region of Barpeta. He introduced a democratic system which is effective till today. Originally built as a Kutcha house, it was concreted with big-pillars and decorative wall paintings in 1878.
