Banapuriswarar Temple, is located at Kumbakonam town ,Tamil Nadu. Saint Manickavasagar had praised about Lord Shiva of this Temple in his Keerthi Thiruvagal. It is more than 1000 years old. The temple is one of 12 Shiva temples connected with the Mahamaham festival, which takes place in Kumbakonam every 12 years. They are : Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Kumbeswarar Temple, Someswarar Temple, Nageswara Temple, Kalahasteeswarar Temple, Gowthameswarar Temple, Kottaiyur Kodeeswarar temple, Amirthakalasanathar Temple, Banapuriswarar Temple, Abimukeswarar Temple, Kumbakonam, Kambatta Visvanathar Temple and Ekambareswarar Temple. This temple is one among them. Moolavar : Banapuriswarar / Somanathar and is facing east. ; Ambal: Soma Kamalambal / Kamalambigai. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa tree. It is on the southern side of the prakaram.The Temple is facing east with three tired Rajagopuram. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Mahamandapam, Artha Mandapam and Sanctum. Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Arthanareeswarar, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Ambal is housed in a separate south facing shrine in Maha Mandapam. Her shrine is situated in the northern side. She is in standing posture with four hands. She is holding Rudraksha and Lotus flower in two hands and other two hands showing varadaand Abhaya Hasta. There is a shrine for Lord Vishnu with his consorts Sridevi & Bhudevi in the Temple premises. Hanuman can be found facing Lord Vishnu Shrine.There is a Durga Shrine in the north west corner of the Temple. The shrine houses a big Durga Idol. There are shrines for Vinayaga, Lord Murugan with his consortsValli & Deivanai, Chandikeswarar, Durga, Bhairava and Navagrahas in the Temple premises. As per legend, Sage Vyasa once had to face a curse from Nandideva, vehicleof Lord Shiva. As advised by Lord Vishnu, he prayed to LordShiva and got relieved of the curse.He also installed a Shivalinga in the temple known as Vyasa Linga. King ofVangadesa - now Bengal - worshipped Lord Shiva here forcuring his wife Gandhimathi suffering from a prolonged illness,as advised by Sage Soodha. He also did some renovations inthe temple.He was blessed with children too.Laziness willvanish from those praying to Mother Somakalambal who alsoblesses devotees with an attractive appearance.

Banapureeswarar Temple Kumbhakonam During the Pralaya the Puranakumbam (amirtham in a pot - bowl of nectar) moved from Mahameru to south direction and reached Kumbakonam, Shiva in the form of Kirathamurthy (as hunter) aimed the Puranakumbam with the bow and arrow (banam in Sanskrit language) and breaked it, the bowl split and the Amirtham got stagnated in two places at Portramaraikulam (golden lotus pond) and Mahamahamkulam. A Shiva lingam formed at the place where Kirathamurthy aimed the Amithrakudam. Since the lord used the arrow (banam) the deity lingam is called Banabureeswarar. The temple is located on the northern part of Kumbakonam city, reachable via Government men's college. It is one km away from the bus stand.

Banapuriswarar Temple is a Hindu templelocated in the town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India.
