Badami Chalukyas Art of stone is a group of temples on the hill, connected to Badami Fort. The structures date back to early 6th century when the Chalukyas of Vatapi (Badami ) emerged as major power. the hill also provides breathtaking views of the cityscape of Badami. Also, you can enjoy sunset here since this is the highest point that you will get to in Badami.

On the way back from the fort, finally we found a path leading to the twin towers but it was very narrow and steep. The path is through between two rocks. Initially we rejected to go there. We thought its impossible to reach there. But then my wife Vismayi told us that I will try to go there. It was surprise for us. She reached ther within 2 minutes. She motivated us to go through that narrow and steep way. Finally we reached there and it was great moment for us. It was a golden moment for all of us. We got awesome bird's eye view of Badami from here.

There might be a path to reach them but it was very narrow and steep, just on the left of the first gateway to the northern hill. There were many monkeys too. You can also see it from the lower shivalaya temple.

Architectural marvels of Badami Chalukyas The Badami Chalukya period (6th - 8th Century AD) was an important period in the development of South Indian Architecture. Chalukyas developed the Chalukya or the Vesara style of temple architecture that reached culmination under the Rashtrakutas and the Hoysalas. The Chalukya style was a unique blend of the northern Nagara and the Dravidian styles. The temples of the Badami Chalukyas can be divided into two stages. The first was represented by the early structural and rock cut temples at Aihole and Badami. The Ladkhan Temple, is a flat roofed temple dedicated to Shiva. It is one of the oldest temple in Aihole. The temple consists of garbha griha with mandapa in front of it consisting of 12 carved pillars. The walls have floral patterns on them and the windows have lattice work done in the northern style. The Durga temple was an experiment seeking to adopt the Buddhist Chaitya style into a Brahmanical Temple. It reverentially displays gods and goddesses from Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism. There are life-size statues of Shiva, Vishnu, Harihara (half Shiva, half Vishnu), Durga in her Mahishasuramardini form killing the buffalo demon, goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, Brahma, Surya, avatars of Vishnu such as Varaha and Narasimha. The Meguti Jain Temple shows some progress towards the construction of Structural temples but is unfinished. Three rock cut cave temples were built at Aihole -one each in Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jain style. Later the Chalukyas refined their style and built four marvellous rock cut temples at Badami - one Jain and three Brahmanical. These temples consist of a rectangular pillared verandah, a square pillared hall with a small shrine cell at the back. Excavated in an axial plane, they have flat roofs like the mandapa type temples. Wide entrances, tall pillars with cushion type capitals supporting the roof and overhanging eaves are the main features of these cave temples. Another noteworthy feature is the running frieze of Ganas in various postures carved in relief on each plinth. The Second stage of Chalukya Temple architecture is represented by the structural temples at Pattadakal. They are the finest specimens of the Chalukya art. Of the ten temples in Pattadakal, six are in Dravidian style and four in Rekhanagara style. The largest temple and the most magnificent temple at Pattadakal is the Virupaksha Temple, whose complex encloses 30 sub shrines and a large Nadi mandapa. This was also earliest example of Shiva temples, which have a Nandi pavilion in front of the temple. The Virupaksha temple in many ways holds resemblance to the Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram. It consists of a high vimana, mandaps and smaller shrines around the courtyard enclosed by a wall. The front and rear walls have large gopura entrances. The smaller shrines are two-storeyed and have vaulted halls. The main square structure has a tall four-storeyed vimana. The mandapa pillars are richly sculptured. The temples at Pattadakal represent both the Northern and Southern style of architecture.
