I stayed at Cowies for 2 nights on the top floor in a superior room and I really enjoyed it. It is in a quiet street off the main road in Colaba so very close to everywhere you want to be yet still peaceful. The top floor has a common area which is a lovely area to sit and watch the sunrise if you so wish, plus a small library and a selection of games. All the facilities are good and the staff are excellent. I will definitely be staying at Cowies when I come back to Mumbai.
Got the 6 bed with shared bathroom for around Rs1,250 per person per day. Stayed for 1 night in oct 2023, mostly saw foreign tourists as the rooms are close to gateway of India. The network in Colaba in general is very poor almost for all carriers when you enter any building, so you have to rely on wifi when you're at the hotel. Although the hotel had wifi service it was not good. There's cabinet storage below bunk beds to put your luggage in, i'd suggest to carry a small lock to keep your valuables secure. The common bathroom were clean all the time, no complaints there. Overall an 8/10
Had a very pleasant introduction to hostel. Staff were friendly and helpful. BUT read full review. Staff allowed us to shower and be in common area even though we were too early to get into our rooms. Great location IMO. MAJOR NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE After midnight, the entire room was awoken to all the lights being turned on and at least one late-arriving gentleman speaking very loudly. Apparently there was a mix up in the bed situation and two people (not me or my partner) were not in the right beds. No matter that there were two beds available... the guy was just annoyed he couldn't sleep in "his" bed and decided to wake the entire room up. After 60 hours of travel I was extremely angry to be woken up in such a manner. Worst part was night manager was present the entire time and made no effort to preserve peace and quiet. All in all: rude people facilitated by a staff member's unwillingness and/or inability to handle a situation with minimal disruption to others. I'm confident this is not the normal experience here but will not be visiting again. Incredibly unprofessional disregard for people not involved in the situation. Also, for anyone over 6'2", you won't be able to stretch out completely in bed. Ladies will prob be grossed out by smell of bathrooms.
Really great for solo travelers. I stay at this place often when I'm visiting alone or even with a friend. the hostels are air conditioned and you have a small kitchen to make your own coffee or toast. washrooms are good as well.
An excellent hostel experience! Rooms are a good size with Aircon. Secure under bed bag storage (bring your own lock). The bathroom waa ensuite and very clean and tidy hot water was good too. There are communal areas and a small kitchen for tea and coffee. It feels secure with security present 24/7 and reception are always there to help if needed
A total rip off for travelers - do not stay here. We paid Rs5000+/night (~$85 CAD/night) during LOW season in July for a private room with no internet and no hot water. Here are the main issues: 1) Our room wasn't ready despite arriving at 17:30 (more than 3 hours after check-in) and the entire hostel being empty. 2) Internet didn't work in our room, talked to management and had to pack all of our things up again and switch rooms. Internet was very spotty in the new room. 3) No hot water. Brought it up to management, they came by to "fix it", still no hot water, no further explanation. Brought it up again next morning and got "I'm sorry ma'am there is nothing I can do". 4) Dirty bathrooms with weird black stuff coming out of the sink. It may be close to the Gateway to India but I highly recommend staying elsewhere. Reply to owner: I checked our statements and it was definitely $85 CAD per night. Also while someone came up to "show us how to use the water", it only had warm water for at most 1 minute, then went back to cold. No solution. The internet wasn't out for "a few minutes", it was out for several hours. Do not down play the concerns your guests have.
Fantastic hostel. Staff are friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Location is ideal and the rooms are clean, tidy and have efficient a/c. Great value for money and highly recommended if you are visiting south Mumbai.
