The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Attukal Bhagavathy. The temple complex features traditional South Indian architectural elements, including a main sanctum, various halls, and surrounding courtyards. The deity, Attukal Bhagavathy, is believed to be a form of the goddess Parvati, and she is worshipped for her protective and nurturing qualities. The temple is most renowned for the annual Attukal Pongala festival, a unique event where millions of women come together to prepare a ritualistic offering known as "Pongala." This offering is made in clay pots and consists of rice, jaggery, coconut, and other ingredients. The festival's highlight is the moment when the chief priest lights a fire and blesses the Pongala pots, infusing them with divine grace. The Attukal Pongala festival holds a Guinness World Record for hosting the largest gathering of women for a religious activity. The temple's historical and cultural significance, as well as its unique festivals, make it a central point of devotion and attraction for people seeking spiritual solace and cultural experiences in Kerala.
There is no specific dress code to visit the temple. Goddess Attukalamma (Bhadrakali/Kannaki) is believed to be present at Attukal during the festival days. Ponkal is offered to celebrate the victory of Kannaki over the king Pandya. Another story says that 'Attukal devi' is Bhadrakali, born from the third eye of lord Shiva to kill the demon king Daruka.
Temple Darshan is awesome. It is around 3-4 K.M. from Thampanoor Bus Stand. Buses are available to this area but you have to walk around 1 K.M. from bus stand to temple. I suggest you to catch local autos or Ola/Rapido/Uber Autos. There is no dress code to visit this temple in normal days. In the weekdays, it takes no time to have darshan. Contact the local people about the temple timings. You can buy prasadam like Aravannam, UnniAppam from the temple. The area surrounding the temple has lot of greenery and it is very nice to visit.
