Asirgarh -a formidable hill fortress nestled on Satpura Range at a height of 250 feet from mean sea level. Situated on the left side of NH 753L on the way to Indore from Burhanpur (nearest town 24 km south). Said to be built by the king Asa Ahir in the early 15th century. It remained invincible for a greater part of history and due to its strategic location also known as "Key to the Deccan". In the 15th century it was occupied by Nasir Khan of Khandesh and then in 1601 Emperor Akbar wrested it from Farooqi king. Legend/myth associated with the fort is that Chiranjivi Aswaththama of Mahabharata (son of Dronacharya famed teacher of Kaurawas and Pandawa) used to visit and offer prayers at old Shiva temple (Gupteshwar/Ahireshwar) Mahadev temple. ASI needs more dedicated efforts to restore it for the future.
The place is beautiful (during and post rain) and full of history (mostly wars of course). I have been there so many times in past 8 years. The sad thing is nothing is being done to attract more tourists. No toilets, no guides, no restaurants or even places to buy snacks from. Unorganized parking. It's another example of our ancient cultural history being deteriorated systematically. And yes...full of clutter. As there is no one to supervise, people throw all their trash, empty bottles and what not within the fort premises itself. If you still planning to go, Go during monsoon season. Do not carry any extra weight, just water bottle. Do not climb on the walls to get photographs.
A great place to visit at monsoon, greenish background and the fort stands tall. Dont forget to visit the shiva temple inside the fort. Its around 400 mtrs from the fort. Its believed that, ashwathama still does pooja to this shiva.
Liked the place because of greenery caused by rain and a temple of Lord Shiv which is said to be visited and worshipped by Ashwatthama every dawn, yet no one has seen him. The Water Harvesting plan is so well designed that the fort may never run out of water, there are many small lakes with water and wells called 'Baoli' except this there's nothing much for the visitors to enjoy
Asirgarh is a medieval fort and Gateway to south India through Satpura range. Politically and economically important place of that time. Constructed in 15 th century by Asa Ahir. Taxes could be collected from merchants going either way to north or south. The place was under the reign of: Ahirs->Faruqi >Mughal->Maratha->Holkars->Shinde->British
Beautiful Fort Very Huge And Historical.
A good fort for the view from top. Very less crowd comes here.
Visiting Asirgarh Fort towards the end of the monsoon season allows you to enjoy the post-rain clarity, pleasant weather, and serene atmosphere.
Went there in the month of February and it wasn't either green or full of water. But even then one can simply assume the kind of greenery they can get to see in the monsoon months. A nice place to spend 1 hour or to organise a picnic. People told me
