Om namah shivaya . Ancient Temple. Temple located in Madurai - Thondi road. Also near to Sivagangai. Lord Shiva is the Main Deity of this temple. You can see the big temple pond near by the temple. The temple contains two Rajagopuram one 9-storied Rajagopuram of 157 feet height and another 5-storied tower facing east with two towers. Of these, the smaller tower was built by Sundarapandiyan I and the larger Rajagopuram by the Marudu brothers. The temple has two praharas and is distinguished by three shrines of the Lord. In the middle of the three Sannidhis is Swarnakaleeswarar. He is the deity of this temple. Most known fact about this temple,There is a history about the big Rajagopuram in this place. In the 19th century, the Marudu brothers were hiding in the forest after escaping the war between the British and the Marudupandi brothers. The British, intending to arrest the Marutupandiya brothers, shouted that they would demolish this great tower if they did not come and surrender. The Marutupandiyas who were wandering in the forest came to know about this and surrendered at the cost of their lives to protect the tower, and were later hanged by the white man. Most visited temple in Sivagangai district.

This temple is one of an ancient temple and it's built 2000 years ago, Rajagopuram which is looks gigantinc and very beautiful which having nine floors. In this temple a special thing is here three lord shiva sannathi, three amman sannathi, three Natarajar, three Palliyarai, three suriyan, three chandran, three kodimaram were available. Near by the temple there is a large pond in the center of that pond a Mandapam is available, This pond is a model to built Vandiyur Pond which is situated in madurai. The one this which hurt me more is here the maintenance is not good around the praharam. There are more leakages in the roof at walking area around the roof.

Kaleeswarer kovil which has the primary god of lord shiva is one of the ancient temples in Tamilnadu located at Kalayar kovil 22kms from Sivaganga.
