Anglo-Sikh Treaty Spot rupnagar - Featured Reviews (64)
This place is adjacent to the Satluj River in Ropar. A historic meeting between Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Lord Willam Bentinck, the Governor General of India took place at Ropar on the Bank of Satluj under a PIPAL TREE on 26th October, 1831. Ostnsibly, the Governer General met the Maharaja to show to the world that he and the Maharaja were friendly. Various boundary issues were settled between Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the British. Ranjit Singh, popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab or "Lion of Punjab", was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. He survived smallpox in infancy but lost sight in his left eye. Lieutenant General Lord William Henry Cavendish Bentinck GCB GCH PC, known as Lord William Bentinck, was a British soldier and statesman who served as the Governor of Fort William from 1828 to 1834 and the first Governor-General of India from 1834 to 1835. This treaty draws a border line in Sikh Kingdom and British Rule. The area in the Northern bank of Satluj remains with the Sikhs, and the Southern side with British Rule. This place has a lot of greenery, river view and a calm atmosphere. You must visit if you want to be with the history.
The place is of historical importance. It is serene and beautiful. However, the park and the structure is looks neglected. Proper due care should be given by concerned authorities.
Just on the bank of Satluj river near Ropar head works. This place known for Anglo-Sikh treaty site . A treaty signed between Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and the British Empire. Very important place as per historic point of view. Very few people aware about its historic value. Govt should promote this place .
