Amer was once known as Dhundar and was ruled by the Kachhwahas from the 11th to the 16th century, until the capital was moved from here to Jaipur. Raja Man Singh built this fort in 1592 AD and Raja Jai Sigh I expanded and renovated it later. While many such old structures have been either destroyed or replaced by other things, this fort has stood against all the tests of time and invasions. Amer Fort/Palace is a beautiful structure that was built by Raja Man Sing in the 16th century. Don't forget to check out the 'Sheesh Mahal', 'Diwan-i-Aam' and 'Sukh Mahal' also. The fort is a ten minute walk uphill and your little trek will be worth the wonders that it offers. Don't miss the royal elephant ride while you are at it!

The climb to the Palace can be a bit tiring so you have a few options at the base of the fort, you can take a four wheel drive for some 500 Rs and pay for the parking 50 Rs. you need a good 2-3 hours to see all of it. Lots of good areas for photography and really an amazing place; although it can get pretty crowded.. 11 kilometres away from Jaipur main city. Lot of walking to be done in the fort.. Sheesh Mahal is a part of Amber fort with full of Shining glasses. There is a light and sound show in evening which we didn't see. Amer fort is huge. There's lot of walking and climbing steps involved. Pls go with a good guide. We hired a guide so we got a fantastic history lesson on the palace and the fort and the maharajas and maharanis. Plus a private photographer.

Successive rulers added to Amber Fort before moving the capital to Jaipur in 1727. The fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013 as part of a group of six hill forts in Rajasthan. Its architecture is a noteworthy fusion of Rajput (Hindu) and Mughal (Islamic) styles. Amber Fort is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. To reach the entrance at the top, you can either walk uphill, go by jeep, golf cart, or take your vehicle. However, it gets hectic during the tourist season and traffic jams are common.
