This place was a Shikargah or hunting lodge where sultans and kings hunted and enjoyed the kill. Ahu in Persian means deer and Khana is meal hence the name AhuKhana. Constructed on right bank of river Tapti by Shahjahan. His queen Mumtaz Mahal hailed from Burhanpur. During 14th childbirth she died here in 1631. Shahjahan wanted to build a unique memorial for his beloved and wished it to be remembered by all. However he was informed that quality marble was not available here and that the soil was not fit for a massive building. After keeping embalmed body here for a couple of months it was shifted to Agra and buried in Taj Mahal there. In a huge plot of land only a Baradari and Ahukhana lodge stand. Looks barren and uncared for. Approach roads to the site are in bad shape. Better hire a vehicle. No restaurant or eatery available there. Free entry. Hot and humid during the day, take care.

Ahu khana- Burhanpur (A historical City) . "Across the Tapti from Burhanpur is one of its most well known monuments, the Ahukhana, literally 'deer park' which was used as a hunting round during Faruqi and Mughal period. Burhanpur was the birth place of Mumtaj. And here at Ahukhana she use to do hunting. It was her one of the favorite place. Behind this monument there is one another monument where Mumtaj was kept for 6 month after her Death Ahukhana is present in Jananabad located in Burhanpur. Mumtaz Mahal's grave located at some distance from this place, which was the wife of King Shah Jahan, was kept before making Taj Mahal. Mumtaz Mahal died in Burhanpur, giving birth to 14th child. Burhanpur is a historic city located in Madhya Pradesh. The area is enclosed by a compound wall and a big garden. (C.16th CAD.) For, now this place is in very pathetic situation. No one is taking care of this place and its locked most of the time, No maintenance has taken. No cleanliness, and all the wall and arches are in broken condition. People's names are writing on the walls. There is no road to reach there and even Google Map was not showing proper way. Even the stone board where all the information were written about this monument was broken. Government or some NGO should take care of such beautiful historical place and kept the History alive. .

Ahukhana is a small Village in Burhanpur Tehsil in Burhanpur District of Madhya Pradesh State, India. (3 KM from Burhanpur). The monument is a pleasure house situated across the river Tapti, opposite the Fort of Burhanpur. It consists of pillared hall in typical Mughal style. On the both side of the monument there are a tanks in which a raised platforms were constructed. The area is enclosed by a compound wall and a big garden. She died while giving birth to their 14th child and was buried in a pavilion facing a small palace in a deer park. Emperor Akbar's grandson, Emperor Shah Jahan, ran his military campaigns against southern kingdoms from Burhanpur, accompanied by his wife Mumtaz. For about six months, Mumtaz's body remained in the pavilion while Shah Jahan made plans to build the Taj Mahal on the banks of the nearby River Tapti. But unfortunately, Burhanpur's geography, geology and hydrology conspired against his plans.

The story of Taj Mahal as Mumtaz Mahal's mausoleum and a symbol of Shah Jahan's love for his wife is well-known. But few know that Mumtaz Mahal died 900 km away from Agra, in the city of Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh. During Shah Jahan's reign, Burhanpur was an important city and the capital of the suba of Khandesh. The city's strategic location played a pivotal role on the trade route connecting North India with the Deccan. In 1629, a rebel Mughal commander named Khan Jahan Lodi had joined hands with the Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar. To suppress this rebellion Emperor Shah Jahan headed to Burhanpur. The empress consort, Mumtaz Mahal accompanied Shah Jahan notwithstanding the failing health after her 13th childbirth. On 17th June 1631, Mumtaz suffered complications in her pregnancy and died during childbirth while giving birth to their fourteenth child. She was only 40 years old. The inconsolable Shah Jahan deputed his second son, Shah Shuja to find a suitable site for her burial. Mumtaz Mahal was buried in a garden known as Zainabad where a pavilion constructed. It is believed that Burhanpur was never intended as her final place of burial as Mumtaz Mahal's body was embalmed with special medicinal (Unani) technique to prevent decomposition.
