Adurru (or locally DubarajuGudi) is a 2400 year old Buddhist site in Razole taluk of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh close to the banks of river Vainetaya, a tributary of river Godavari river very close to the Bay of Bengal. The foundation of the stupa here was laid by Sanghmitra, Ashoka's daughter on her way to Sri Lanka. This site was excavated by Archaeological Survey of India in 1923. The operation unearthed several stupas, chaityas and viharas. The Mahastupa, built on wheel shaped plan 17 feet in diameter with a raised platform running all around the drum and Ayaka platforms on cardinal directions.

Adurru was a flourishing Buddhist Centre 2,400 years ago. This place in Adurru has a once impressive Maha-Sthupa, assumed to be constructed on the orders of Princess Sanghamitra, daughter of Emperor Asoka the Great, on her way to propagate Buddhism in Sri Lanka (? - Contradicting sources exist) (c.3rd/2nd Centuries BCE). Because of the remote location of the village & lack of awareness & partial excavations (coupled with a probable cost-benefit analysis), there is evidently little that the ASI or State Government could do about this site. Hence, the locals and few enthusiastic Buddhists formed a trust to protect this site. Positives - Peaceful location, well maintained to some extent with banyan trees and a little pond of water lillies. Be wary of - Remote Location of the place, lack of awareness and absense of any information boards.

This place is a remnant of our old history reminding us about the beautiful creations by our ancestors. However, I am very disappointed with the way this place has been managed. This place houses an ancient stupa built during the 2-4 century AD. This a Buddhist Stupa and was unearthed by Archelogical Survey of India. There are different structures with like wheel, the big Stupak etc. There are no explanations about the structures and I feel it should be placed so that visitors could get details about each of the structure. Nor there are any person/guide to explain.
