The lake was named after its founder. The lake was built to improve the lives of the people in the city. It was constructed after a dam was built across the Luni River. The lake is one of the most popular lakes in Ajmer and one of the largest lakes in India. It is almost 8 miles (13 km) in circumference. The lake's water-spread area varies between 97 and 182 ha, and the depth ranges from 1.9 m to 4.4 m. The lake's catchment covers 70.6 km2 and includes Nagpahar hills and Taragarh hills. The lake's catchments were built with the help of local people. The lake is a major attraction of the city and attracts a large number of tourists every year. It is advisable to visit the lake early morning or late evenings because the weather in Ajmer can be very hot.
