The fort was built following the founding of the Orchha State in 1501 AD by Rudra Pratap Singh (r. 1501-1531), a Bundela Rajput.The palaces and temples within the fort complex were built over a period of time by successive Maharajas of the Orchha State. Of these, the Raja Mandir or Raja Mahal was built by Madhukar Shah who ruled from 1554 to 1591

The fort was well maintained and construction was still under process for the beautification of palace. A ticket is required which is applicable for all the historical places nearby. Price of ticket is rs 50. Inside there is Raja Mahal and jahangir fort ,dauji ki kothi , uunt khana. Pre wedding shoot by drone facility and camera is also available. Guides are available. Sheesh Mahal a resort and restuarant is present inside which has great food.

Orchha is situated near the ghats of river betwa and just five minutes walk from the Raja Ram temple orchha. Fort architecture is mixed with indo Mughal pattern specially the top portion or the Domb is designed according to Mughal era and architecture. Rest of the segments are derived from Indian architecture and few amalgamations. One can easily see different patterns and different types of animals drawn on the walls. Daily 2 shows are organised by the government body to showcase history and importance of the fort and orchha.
